SUSE Linux 10.1 released

The latest version of the famous Linux distribution, SUSE Linux, was released recently. With the good cooperation between KhmerOS and Novell, finally we were able to make SUSE Linux 10.1 the first Linux distribution that works well with Khmer out of the box. By choosing Khmer as the installation language (yes, you can install in Khmer), you'll get Khmer font, standard Khmer keyboard and many application translated. Some problem still exist though. One of the Khmer fonts (named Khmer OS) is broken due to the lacking of testing, the translation of OpenOffice is not included on the media due to the space is limited. Another problem is the translation. In this release, SUSE include only KDE 3.5.1 which mean many Khmer translation are missed for KDE. As mentioned already sometime ago (http://www.khmeros.info/drupal/?q=en/node/525), our target release is the one after this release (maybe 10.2), so we still have more time to fix what we have. SUSE 10.1 come with a complete set of 5 CDs together with another CD of non-open source software. You can download the complete ISOs from the URLs below or get them at Open Forum of Cambodia. virtual machine?

It looks like you are installing Suse in a virtual machine? Maybe this software does not support Suse 10.1 or Linux yet. The only thing I can suggest is to google for others who have the same problem.

I'm not sure if there's

I'm not sure if there's something wrong with the Khmer language package. I tried three time choosing Khmer language and failed. I decided to give it another shot in English language and it worked. I also installed in my PC through a virtual Parallel Workstation; it took only one try. Somehow, I still can't make Suse to recognize the Airport card yet. For those who work on multiple operating systems, I recommend an Intel-based Mac to save space. You can create virtual environment and install as many operating system as you want. If you have enough RAM you can even launch multiple systems at the same time. Unlike the old Mac with PowerPC processor, the new Intel-based Mac doesn't need to emulate Intel processor. I installed a PhotoshopCS2 in my virtual WindowXp and use it just like the physical PC. See screenshot http://botrakhmer.com/virtualpc-secreenshot

Hi already installed SuSe, first time install ask me to change language, and i changed to KHMEr it is good, but after finish installed and start SuSe, there is no khmer, where to change to from eng to khmer?? Thanks i LOVE KHMER

That's strange. It should install almost everything related to Khmer. But anyway, you still can enable Khmer interface from English. To have an almost-completed interface in Khmer, you have to change both KDE and YaST to Khmer. - KDE: Go to K Menu - Personal Settings - Regional & Accessibility - Country/Region & Language. Now you should see only English in the Languages box. But if there is already Khmer, you can just move Khmer up. If there is no Khmer, you can click Add Language then select Other and finally Khmer. Here, if there is no Khmer, you have to install Khmer translation of KDE. To install, go to YaST - Software - Software Management. Then search for Khmer. You should now see kde3-i18n-km. Now you can select to install it. - YaST: Go to K Menu - System - YaST. After giving root password, the YaST window appear. Now select System, then Language. You then can select Khmer from the Primary Language box. Finally, click Accept. Hope this will help.

Hi, A friend of mine working on Kg. Cham wants to use Khmer Unicode on his lab computers that have Linix installed. What is the easiest way for him to do that? Get some of these cds? Or does someone have a step-by-step tutorial on how to get Khmer Unicode working on a Linix (if not, is anyone interested in doing that? I know I would be interested in putting a link to it at sbbic or even hosting it)? Thanks, Nathan

If he wants to use SUSE Linux, he can get the installer CDs from us. As mentioned above already, in SUSE Linux 10.1, if you select to install in Khmer, you'll get your computer ready for Khmer Unicode. But for other Linux distribution, you'll have to install the Khmer keyboard driver and fonts manually. There is a README file in the keyboard driver package for Linux. This is the tutorial that we have at the moment.
