As of 2008, Free and Open Source software has reached a level in which it can easily compete with Microsoft. Cambodia is a clear case, in which high quality software has been translated to Khmer and localized to Cambodian culture, effectively replaced proprietary Office applications in the education system.

Unicode is more and more becoming the standard for documents in Cambodia with policy supporting it.

A reasonable number of fonts have been developed for Khmer Unicode, and they are widely used. Recent developments in proprietary software have made possible using Unicode in the printing and design industry.

Localization to Khmer is now widespread, not only covering software, but also manuals, books, and textbooks for the education system. The KhmerOS projecet has developed the WordForge Localization editor, a specialized tool for localization that is starting to be used all over the world for Free and Open Source localization.

Here is an overview about the different technologies relevant for the KhmerOS project.
